Sound

Sound

Common sound techniques used in classic film noirs were male first person voice over narration, foreboding background music used for suspense, and ambient sounds such as noises commonly heard in the crime filled cities that film noirs were set in such as the sound of shouting, traffic or sirens as well as appropriate sound effects for example doors creaking open or police sirens outside is a criminal is about to get caught. Pleonastic sound is also used for emphasis, for example if a detective is waiting alone in his office for the femme fatale to arrive and he is nervous, the sound of his office clock ticking can be heightened to add a beat to the scene, creating suspense like a heartbeat.
